Winsor & Newton Watts Painting Prize is a reflection of Watts Gallery’s commitment to supporting the development of new artists drawing on G. F. Watts’s and Mary Seton Watts’s vision. The prize is awarded annually to a graduate of the University College for the Creative Arts, Farnham, whose choice of subject matter and use of innovative working methods are in the spirit of the Watts’ artistic legacy. The prize was founded in 2004 as part of Watts Centenary celebrations, and the former winners have included Tristan Brooks (2004), Kevin Wells (2005), Sandy Curry (2006) and our current Artist in Residence, Anna Readman (2007).

All the winners of the Winsor & Newton Prize have been invited to become Watts Gallery’s Artist in Residence for one academic year. Leading a number of art workshops and community art projects as an integral part of our learning programme, the artists have provided inspiration to numerous school groups, the general public, artists with special needs and excluded groups through projects such as the Big Issue Workshops. The Artist in Residence scheme culminates with an exhibition of the artist’s work, and this year Anna Readman’s ‘Urban Reflections’ show explores the human condition in contemporary society through a number of landscapes and portraits.
