Funds raised for Red Robe Self Portrait

Watts Gallery is delighted to announce that, thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters, we are now the proud owners of the last known self-portrait by G F Watts.

The portrait of Watts is the only one depicting the artist in his mid- career and it is the only known three-quarter length self-portrait that exists. At a time when Watts Gallery Trust is aiming to bring alive the life and society of the artist, this striking painting of Watts, in a distinctive red artisan robe, tells a story of his success and self- belief at the high point of his career. We intend to display this wonderful portrait in Limnerslease, Watts’s Compton home and studio, when it opens to the public in 2015 and it is currently available to view in Watts Gallery.

We are so very grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Art Fund, the V&A Purchase Grant Fund, the Compton Parish Council, Nevill Keating Pictures and the many generous donors who have helped us to complete the appeal.
