Perdita Hunt completes the Solent Swim challenge
On Saturday 27 September two hours after setting off from Gilkicker Point Perdita Hunt and team, arrived on Ryde Sand and the Solent Swim to save the Watts Studios was successfully achieved.
Here Perdita describes her arduous task: “It was a beautiful sunny day and I was accompanied by kayaker, Michael Binnie, a volunteer at Watts Gallery, who was making his first journey across the Solent. Also in the little flotilla was Derek, who provides first aid for Surrey and has trained all staff in first aid at Watts Gallery, and my daughter Roxane Gergaud and son Louis Gergaud. Everyone was volunteering their time.
During the crossing, one of the busiest stretches of water in the world, we awaited a dredger, had a discussion with a yachtsman or two, fought against the current, and Michael fed me dates to counter the cramp. We arrived at just after 1pm.”
So far we have raised nearly £7,000 so any and every donation is now really important to help meet the £10,000 target to save the Watts Studios. The Studios will be a space for community learning, pottery making, enjoying Watts’s studio as he left it, discovering the art of Mary Seton Watts and learning more about the lives of two great Victorians in the Surrey Hills.
