In a bid to help Save Watts Studios on 27 September, Director of Watts Gallery, Perdita Hunt, swam the Solent, one of the busiest stretches of water in the world, and raised over £7,000. Read more about Perdita’s swim by clicking here.

Inspired by her efforts, Watts Gallery staff members have decided to form their own 'Team Physical Energy' and expand the challenge to a triathlon series. Please support the Watts Gallery ‘Team Physical Energy’ as they attempt a Triathlon Series of events raising money to save the Watts Studios, the only remaining 19th-century artists’ studio with its collection still intact and the only remaining house and studio designed by Sir Ernest George, the great Arts & Crafts architect. The team will be undertaking three challenges:

Challenge 1: Swim the Solent, 27 September
Challenge 2: 40km Cycletta Surrey, 12 October
Challenge 3: 11.7km Hog's Back Road Race, 7 December

With this challenge the team aims to raise £10,000 towards the £680,000 total, which will secure this important building for future generations and to unlock the monies pledged by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Every donation is important.

Please support us by donating online, texting ‘WATT14’ followed by the amount you wish to donate to 70070 or handing a donation to a member of staff, with the cheque payable to ‘Watts Gallery’.

Here some members of Team Physical Energy explain why they are wanted to support the Save the Studios campaign:

“Working with the Watts Collection on a daily basis, I have access to an array of objects relating to the Wattses and their lives. It is such a shame that they are not out for all to see as there is not a suitable context in which to display them. The opening of Watts Studios will allow all visitors greater access to the collection and appreciate how these artists created their iconic works. Supporting the Studios will ensure that these objects are not hidden from the next generation.” - Rhian Addison, Assistant Curator

“I chose to do the run and cycle ride to raise money to save the Watts Studios, in a bid to be active and to set myself a challenge. In a mad moment I chose to do the run as well as the cycle ride! When the Watts Studios are completed they truly will be a wonderful visitor attraction and public support so far has been amazing. No matter what you can give every donation is important in raising money to save the Watts Studios.” - Francesca Salino, Marketing Assistant

“I’ve wanted to make a personal contribution to the Saving the Studios Campaign for a while now and taking part in the Watts Team Triathlon seemed like the perfect way to do it. Watts Gallery is more than just a job for me, it is a cause that I really believe in. Saving the Studios is not only about rescuing an important piece of heritage for the nation; it will provide paid apprenticeships, reach out to the most disadvantaged in our community, enable more learning for schools, ensure the conservation and restoration of significant piece of British history and provide a valuable piece of insight into the world of a prolific artist. Please help our campaign and support Team Physical Energy!” - Sarah Mitchell, Development Assistant

I am a mother of two who hasn't been on her bike for many years. Hence, this is a huge challenge for me. If art helps us understand the history of humanity, then Watts's art and ideas should be at the forefront. Please do support us, the Watts Studios, when completed will be marvelous. - Adriana Ponton-Castro, Accounts Assistant
