Raising Funds to save the Watts Home & Studios

The Swim, in one of the busiest stretches of water on the South Coast, aims to raise funds to rescue the last remaining house and studio designed by Sir Ernest George and the only 19th-century artists' studio with its collection still intact.

The participants in the swim include Perdita Hunt, Director of Watts Gallery, Leo Hacking, Richard Dana, Ben Rochelle, Sarah Giles, Jack Burrows & Perdita’s children Louis, Roxane and Gavroche Gergaud. The 3-mile swim will start from Gilkicker in Portsmouth and finishing at Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

Watts Gallery Trust has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy the remarkable Grade II listed Arts & Crafts building, at risk of being sold. Your donation will help restore the studios, offer more learning to schools, reach out to disadvantaged groups and offer paid apprenticeships to local people not in education, employment or training.

The swim aims to raise the profile of the Watts Gallery Trust’s campaign which hopes to

- Save the Watts studios in Compton
- Restore the space in which Watts painted some of his most famous paintings,
- Return the pottery studio in which Mary Watts worked with the local community teaching terracotta clay modelling, creating a conservation studio for a trainee conservator, establishing the Mary Watts Gallery to show her collection and interpret the Mary Watts Gallery,
- Establish a Studio Gallery which will explore the role and importance of artists’ houses and studios.
