The Marquesses of Bute: Patrons of Opulence
Tuesday 28 March
7.30 - 8.30pm
£10 including complimentary drink
Matthew Williams, art architectural historian and Curator of Cardiff Castle, discusses the Marquesses of Bute, an ancient Scots family who rose to prominence during the eighteenth century.
The scholarly third Marquess was a great architectural patron. His extraordinary and intensely personal buildings include two romantic Welsh castles and Mount Stuart, his own home in Scotland, once memorably described as being 'like a head on collision between the Taj Mahal and a Victorian railway hotel.'
Discover the Marquess's connection to renowned Arts & Crafts architects including William Burges, Robert Rowand Anderson, Robert Weir Schultz and John Kinross.
This event is in partnership with the Arts & Crafts Movement in Surrey.
