This week, learn more about Lady Somers, Watts's 1860 portrait. Countess Somers (Virginia Pattle) was renowned for her beauty and charisma, causing Watts to fall in love with and paint many portraits of her. Ironically, one painting produced in 1849-1850 caused Sir Charles Newton to fall in love with, and subsequently marry Virginia in 1850, leaving Watts 'deeply grieved'.
