FREE Tour of Watts Chapel
Tuesday 4 December
Tours take place at 12pm and 2pm
Watts Chapel, which stands on Budburrow Hill (just 300 yards from Watts Gallery), is a Grade 1-listed building. It was consecrated on 1 July 1898 and continues to be a working cemetery chapel.
Mary Watts was the artistic force behind the design, building and decoration of the chapel. In her guide The Word in the Pattern she dedicates it ‘to the loving memory of all who find rest near its walls, and for the comfort and help of those to whom the sorrow of separation yet remains’.
This extraordinary building is a wonderful fusion of Byzantine and Celtic models. The decoration is an amalgamation of inspirations; every aspect having symbolic meaning which can be brought to life by a guided tour.
