Artist in Residence
The Current Watts Gallery Artist in Residence is Helen Jarvis
Watts Gallery’s Artist-in-Residence Scheme
Watts Gallery has run the Artist-in-Residence scheme since 2005. It was instigated by the generous support of Winsor & Newton and in particular their Chairman, Michael Henderson. For three years it has been supported by The Fenton Arts Trust.
Each year Watts Gallery has appointed a graduate from the University for the Creative Arts and has provided support, encouragement and opportunities for the continuation of their development.
Each artist has participated in workshops as part of the Art for All Learning and Outreach programme at Watts Gallery. They have benefitted from mentoring and introductions to professional contacts. Each residency culminates in a final exhibition showcasing their work.
We are delighted that previous Artists-in-Residence have continued their association with Watts Gallery. The Big Issues project at HMP Send resulted in Sandy Curry becoming the Michael Varah Artist-in-Residence at the prison. Nathalie Roset is currently working on a project with HMP Bronzefield.
The restored Watts Gallery will include a studio for future Artists-in-Residence. This has been generously funded by Guildford Borough Council and the Spencer Wills Trust.
Previous Artists-in-Residence include Tristan Brooks, Kevin Wells, Sandy Curry, Anna Readman and Nathalie Roset, Sheila Wallis and Deborah Gourlay. Helen Jarvis is the current Artist-in-Residence at Watts Gallery.
Watts Gallery is most grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Fenton Arts Trust and Winsor & Newton for making this scheme possible. Thank you also to the University for Creative Arts and the University of Surrey for their wonderful partnerships.
