Tristan Brooks
The Fenton Arts Trust Artist in Residence 2004-05
‘My artistic practice is fuelled by a compulsion to create largely abstract compositions from my imagination using a number of traditional media as well as experimenting with industrial materials reflecting the fast-progressing urbanization of our planet. My work responds to the developments in contemporary world as reflected in news stories and the often forgotten impact of technology on everyday life. I am particularly interested in the uncelebrated every-day objects and inventions that have become essential to our existence, but that man forgets to appreciate. Electricity, motor vehicles and mechanical engineering are a constant source of inspiration. Having grown up in London, my work often explores how urban landscape reflects technological advances of man as manifested through diverse objects ranging from street lights through garage doors to kitchen appliances. The structural intricacy of some human designs contrasted with the intangible quality of others has provided subjects for my work. The electricity pylon combines these two qualities as a complex engineering structure intended to convey ‘invisible’ electrical waves. Man’s aspiration to conquer space is another interest reflected in my work, often featuring flying objects from space shuttles to UFOs.’
