23rd July 2014

Visitors to Watts Gallery will now be able to see two completed terracotta roundels on the front of the Gallery. Sculpted by artist Marcus Cornish, the roundels show the faces of George and Mary Watts looking out over the Gallery lawn. Read more.

Watts Gallery is pleased to announce that we have made it into the long list for the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Award. Out of hundreds of museums across the country Watts Gallery has made it into the final twenty. The long list was announced in The Telegraph last weekend. Read more.

It is exciting to open another show – but not just one – two! The Ellen Terry: A Painter’s Actress opened on 9 June to great interest and support. The actress Geraldine James, spoke powerfully about the importance of this great icon of the 19th Century and gave a reading of the Quality of Mercy speech by Portia from The Merchant of Venice. Last week The Art Forum presented and published their reviews of John Ruskin: Photographer and Draughtsman and the Big Issues exhibition.

The Art Forum is a part of the Watts Gallery young people’s programme Watts Academy and is aimed at 14-18 year olds. The group meets twice a month and gives young people the opportunity to get a behind the scenes view of the inner workings of Watts Gallery. Read their exciting take on both exhibitions below! Preparing for the first Watts at Dusk evening, one of three late nights that we are offering at the Gallery, was a reminder of the fact that we are a Gallery in the heart of a Village. We were informed that a swarm of bees were looking at settling in the gable above the Sculpture Gallery. Fortunately Physical Energy, the model of Watts’s monumental sculpture which is on show in the Sculpture Gallery, frightened the swarm away! Read more.

Last Saturday the curators stepped aside as young people took centre stage to present picture talks to the public.

Over the last couple of months young people who are members of the Watts Academy Art Forum have been working with gallery professionals to research, write and develop their own picture talks. Read more.

A rare Mary Watts Compton Pottery jardinière has been discovered by Francis Pryor and his wife Maisie Taylor (both of whom are notable historians and archealogists) in their back garden. Read more.
