Artist in Residence Opportunity
April – June 2019
In collaboration with The Surrey Space Centre, we are looking for a visual or multidisciplinary artist or collective to propose a creative response to Watts Gallery Trust's forthcoming exhibition, Moonscapes (13 April 2019 – 23 June 2019).
Following Mary Watts' co-production methodology, the artist/s should propose an installation that could be made on site and involve community groups, young people, families and volunteers in its production.
We welcome proposals from artists working in ceramics, sculpture, digital technologies, and crafts.
The work should be accumulative in its production method, growing and changing throughout the residency so that it engages the public from the outset. The work should be visible around the Watts Gallery - Artists' Village estate, making use of the studio, landscape and architecture, including the pathway walk up to Limnerslease – the Artists' House.
Watts Gallery's founders were contemporary artists in their own time and they pushed the boundaries of art practice whilst supporting others to make art, craft and design. The Watts Gallery Artist in Residence programme is now in its 10th year and has supported over 20 artists to develop their practice.

About the exhibition
In the 50 th anniversary year of the first moon landing, this exhibition will explore the fascination that artists and scientists have long had with the earth's closest cosmic neighbor.Bringing together dramatic moonlit landscapes by William Holman Hunt and symbolist paintings of moon goddesses by Evelyn De Morgan with early lunar photography and instruments, this exhibition explores the full artistic inspiration that 19th century artists found in the moon.
The role of the Artist/s in Residence will be to:
Make a creative response to the themes in the Moonscapes exhibition for installation around the estate/landscape throughout April – June in consultation with scientists at the Surrey Space Centre.
Make use of the purpose built studio and be a visible presence on site.
To involve the public in making the work, following the collaborative ethos of Mary Watts and to run drop-in events during the Easter holidays, May Half-term holiday and as part of Museums at Night on May 25, 2019.
Engage audiences, through open studios/demonstrations and workshops.
To explore opportunities for sharing the work through digital platforms.
Watts Gallery Trust will provide:
A £3000 fee
Sole use of a purpose built studio
A budget of £1000 for materials
Staff support and administration
