Chairman: Richard Ormond CBE
Richard Ormond was Assistant Keeper and later Deputy Director at the National Portrait Gallery. He was Head of Pictures at the National Maritime Museum from 1983-5 and was Director from 1986-2000. He was responsible for the following exhibitions: Armada (1988), Henry VIII (1991), Pirates (1994), Titanic (1995) and Story of Time (2000). He completed the refurbishment of Queens House and Royal Observatory and secured £23m lottery funding for the Neptune Court project (roofing the main courtyard of the National Maritime Museum and a complete renovation of the maritime galleries).
Richard is currently director of John Singer Sargent catalogue raisonne project, of which eight volumes have been published by Yale University Press. He was the curator of the 2015 exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Sargent: Portraits of Artists and Friends. Richard has been a generous benefactor to Watts Gallery.
Richard will be standing down as Chairman of the Watts Gallery Board of Trustees at the end of 2017, after thirty years in post. He is currently a member of the Finance and Buildings Committee, a member of the Collections Committee and a member of the Appeal Committee.
Thea Adair, a Compton resident for the last 25 years, lives in the oldest listed manor house in Compton, dating from 1450. The house was where the manorial courts were held for the area. Thea, formerly Chairman of Compton Parish Council, is Trustee of the Watts Chapel Restoration Trust. Thea worked at The Times, with Sir Francis Chichester and at the Victorian Society. She spent five years in the States while working at the British Consulate in Boston. She was employed by the Craftsmen Potters Association and set up the Potters' Camp at Loseley. Thea supports her husband John Adair, an international author on leadership, who travels widely to lecture on his subject.
George Anson was a Managing Director and Partner of HarbourVest Partners, the global private equity firm until his retirement in 2017. He founded the London office of HarbourVest Partners in 1990 and was responsible for their European and overseas investment activities. George has served on HarbourVest's Executive Management Committee (2010-2014) and was the Chairman of Invest Europe (the European private equity association) from 2013-14. He also served on the Board of Directors of HarbourVest Global Private Equity Limited, the London-listed investment company, from 2007-2012.
George is on the Board of Trustees for Watts Gallery Trust and of Asthma UK and The Anson Charitable Trust. He is a lover of country pursuits and is a keen sportsman.
Deborah BriceDebby Brice is an art collector and patron of the arts. She has supported many of the major art institutions in the UK and is a generous benefactor to Watts Gallery Trust. Debby is a member of the International Council of MoMA. Debby is the former Vice Chairman of the Tate International Council, the former Chairman of the I Tatti Council and a former Trustee of the Institute of Fine Arts in New York City. Debby is enthusiastic in supporting organisations which show leadership and have an impact on people's lives. A US citizen, Debby Brice lives in the UK. Debby is a member of the Finance and Buildings Committee of Watts Gallery – Artists' Village.
Matthew Bowcock CBE
Matthew Bowcock is a Council Member of Arts Council England and Trustee of the Beacon Awards and The Philanthropy Workshop. From 2006–13 he was Chairman of UK Community Foundations and was also a founding director of Localgiving.com and a member of the Philanthropy Review Board. In 2012 he authored a report for the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport called 'Digital Giving in the Arts – Democratising Philanthropy.'
His background is in technology entrepreneurship, company start-up and investment, international marketing and company directorship. After a Law degree Matthew worked for international technology companies before setting up a software business in 1989, the first of several businesses he has established in Australia, the US and the UK. In 2000 Matthew established The Hazelhurst Trust, a private family trust, and since 2005 has focused his energies on developing a new culture of engaged philanthropy in Britain.
Professor Rob Dickins CBE
Rob Dickins is Chairman of the Theatres Trust. He was a Trustee of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Foundation for Youth Music and the Brit Trust (the British Phonographic Industry's (BPI) charitable arm for youth music and education). He was Chairman of the National Museum of Childhood at Bethnal Green. He was Chairman of the BPI for a record-breaking four terms. He has been a member of the Department of Culture, Media and Sport's Music Industry Forum 1999-2001. After a long career with Warner Music he set up his own entertainment company, Instant Karma, in 1999. Rob was awarded a CBE in 2002 and was given an honorary Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) degree by Loughborough University in the same year. He was recipient of the annual Music Industry Trusts' Award in 2003.
In 2009 Rob was appointed chairman of The Theatres Trust. In 2012 he was appointed as Trustee for The Julia Margaret Cameron Trust and to the Handel House Museum. In 2013 he was selected to be on the Culture Minister's Arts Advisory Board. Rob has supported Watts Gallery Trust through the gift of The Rob Dickins Collection – over 4000 photographs of Victorian artists. Professor Dickins is Director of Watts Gallery Trust Trading Company.
Richard Dorment CBE
Richard Dorment was art critic at The Daily Telegraph from 1986-2015 and has held positions including Faculty Fellow, Columbia University, 1968-72; PhD Columbia University 1975; Assistant Curator, European Painting, Philadelphia Museum of Art 1973 – 76; Curator, Alfred Gilbert: Sculptor and Goldsmith, R.A, 1985 – 86; Art Critic, Country Life, 1986; and Co-curator, James McNeill Whistler, Tate Gallery, 1994-95.
Richard was on the Judging Panel for the Turner Prize in 1989; the Advisory Committee Government Art Collection, 1996; the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art, 1996–2004; the British Council Visual Arts Advisory Committee, 1997; the Hawthornden Prize for art criticism in Britain, 1992; and was Critic of the Year at the British Press Awards, 2000.
His publications include Victorian High Renaissance (exhibition catalogue), 1978; Alfred Gilbert, 1985; British Painting, 1750 – 1900: A Catalogue of the British Paintings in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1986; Alfred Gilbert Sculptor and Goldsmith, 1986; (with Margaret McDonald) James McNeill Whistler, 1994; reviews for NY Review of Books; Exhibitionist: Writing about Art for a Daily Newspaper, 2016; and he has contributed to Burlington Magazine, TLS, Literary Review.
Christopher Forbes – Trustee Emeritus
Christopher Forbes is an Art History graduate of Princeton University and is internationally recognised as an art collector and historian with a particular interest in the Victorian era. He is Vice-Chairman of Forbes Inc. Forbes is a leading provider of business information for executives and affluent investors. The company's flagship publication, Forbes, has been among the top five magazines in America in ad pages for the last ten years, according to the Publishers Information Bureau.
While still an undergraduate, Mr. Forbes worked as a Curator of The Forbes Magazine Collection. Further reflecting his interest in Art History, he has written several books and catalogues, including: Victorians in Togas, Paintings by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema from the Collection of Allen Funt, Metropolitan Museum, 1973; The Royal Academy (1836-1901) Revisited, Metropolitan Museum and others, 1975; Fabergé: Imperial Eggs and Other Fantasies (with Hermione Waterfield), Charles Scribner's Sons, 1978; and Fabergé Eggs (with Dr. Armand Hammer), Harry Abrams, 1980, now in its fourteenth printing. Mr. Forbes also edited Masterpieces from the House of Fabergé, published by Abrams in 1984. Most recently, Mr. Forbes co-authored with Robyn Tromeur Fabergé: The Forbes Collection, published by Hugh Lauter Levin in the Fall of 1999. In 1986 he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by New Hampshire College. From 1976 through 1978, Mr. Forbes served as Publisher of Nineteenth Century, a quarterly magazine produced by Forbes Inc. on behalf of the Victorian Society in America.
He is Vice Chairman of The Business Committee for the Arts and sits on the boards of The New York Historical Society, The Newark Museum, The New York Academy of Art, and The Prince of Wales Foundation. He is currently serving a four-year term on the Advisory Council of the Victorian Society in America. He is an Honorary Trustee of The Friends of New Jersey State Museum. He is Vice Chairman of the Board of Advisors of The Princeton University Art Museum, a national Trustee of the Baltimore Museum of Art and serves on the Advisory Committee of the Department of European Decorative Arts of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 1987, he was appointed to the Board of Regents of the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York City. In 2003 he was appointed a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour by the French Government. Christopher Forbes is member of the Watts Gallery Hope Appeal committee.
Isabel Goldsmith has been a collector of G F Watts and other Victorian artists for over fifteen years. Isabel has supported an exhibition of Leighton's work at the Royal Academy and is an avid patron of the arts in general. As well as managing her highly sought after hotel/retreat in Mexico, Isabel dedicates herself to artistic and environmental projects. She has been a generous benefactor to Watts Gallery Hope Appeal.

Sir Mark Jones
Sir Mark Jones FRSE is Chair of the Pilgrim Trust. He was Curator of Medals at the British Museum (1974-1992), Director of the National Museums of Scotland (1992-2001), Director of the V&A (2001-11) and Master of St Cross College, Oxford (2011-2016). He has written extensively on the history of the medal, fakes and forgeries, collecting and museums, and restitution. He is a Visitor of the Ashmolean Museum and a Trustee of Tullie House, the Corning Museum of Glass, Compton Verney, Watts Gallery, the Grimsthorpe and Drummond Trust and the Historic Environment Scotland Trust.
Robert Napier CBE
Robert Napier is Chairman of the Trustees of St Mungo's, the homelessness charity. He was until recently the Chairman of Housing and Communities Agency, is a non-Executive Director of Anglian Water and of the Manchester Airport Group. He was Chairman of the Meteorological Office. He served as Chief Executive of WWF-UK from February 1999 to 2006. Formerly he was Chief Executive of Redland plc. Robert was educated at Sedbergh School, he studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge, leading to an MA, and also attended the Harvard Business School.
For over twenty years Robert has been active in the charitable sector. From 1986-1988 he was a Trustee of World in Need, which led to his becoming a founding Trustee of ACET, the Aids Charity, in 1988. He was Chairman of the Trustees of the construction industry charity CRASH. In 1997 he established a charitable trust to fund self-help projects in rural Zambia, many of which have conservation objectives. He is the former Chairman of Governors of Sedbergh School. His interests are hill walking, escaping to Scotland and the works of John Buchan.
Robert is Watts Gallery Trustees' Treasurer and chairs the Finance and Buildings Committee.
Professor Leonée OrmondLeonée Ormond is Professor Emerita of Victorian Studies at King's College, University of London. She has written widely on subjects associated with Victorian literature and painting and is the author of books on Linley Sambourne, George Du Maurier, Frederic, Lord Leighton (with Richard Ormond), J.M. Barrie and Tennyson. She was one of the curators of the Frederic Leighton centenary exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1996.
Professor Ormond became a trustee of Watts Gallery in 1995 and has published a study of Watts's relationship with Tennyson. Leonée also curated the G F Watts: The Hall of Fame exhibition with Richard Ormond in 2012. She has edited a volume on the reception of Tennyson in Europe which will be published in 2017. Leonée is Trustee with responsibility for Learning and is a member of the Collections Committee.
MaryAnne Stevens, independent art historian and curator, was the Director of Academic Affairs at the Royal Academy of Arts, with overall responsibility for the Collections, Library and Archive, and the Learning and Architecture programmes. A specialist in nineteenth-century art, MaryAnne has curated major international loan exhibitions at the Royal Academy and elsewhere, including the recent Manet: Portraying Life. MaryAnne has overseen the delivery of the £4.1 million on-line Cataloguing Project for the Royal Academy's Collection, Library and Archive, and directed the public education and architecture programmes that have established the Royal Academy as a national and international centre of excellence.
MaryAnne sits on the Advisory Board of the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, the Faculty of Archaeology, Humanities and Letters of the British School of Rome, the Executive Committee of the Walpole Society, and the Maggies Centres Arts Group. She is a consultant to the DnB Sparebankstifelsen.
MaryAnne is chair of the Watts Gallery Trust Collections Committee and Chair designate for Watts Gallery Trust.
Emma Verey is an Oxford graduate who spent her early career teaching. Since then she has been Chairman of the Friends of Moorfields Eye Hospital, and the Central London Representative of the National League of Hospital Friends. She was also, for a number of years, a director of RHS Trading Ltd, the commercial arm of The Royal Horticultural Society, also a member of their Gala Committee and on the Development Board of the Bodleian. Today, she is also a Trustee of the Friends at Leighton House.
Emma's interests include art, opera, tapestry, gardening and hens. Together with her husband, Sir David Verey, former Chairman of the Tate, then subsequently, Chairman of The Art Fund, Emma has been involved in innumerable art events over the past twenty years. She is Trustee with special responsibility for the Friends and is a member of the Collections Committee, a Director of the Watts Gallery Trust Trading Committee and one of the team of volunteer gardeners.
