Charlie Betts & Anna Garrett

13 – 22 November & 28 November – 3 December

Biography

Charlie and Anna have been working together for several years, merging their practices and experimenting with their paintings as collaborative, sculptural installations. The artists are interested in deconstructing painting and breaking the boundaries of the canvas and frame. They are not constrained by traditional modes of display - often removing their paintings from the wall and placing them in the landscape.

Charlie Betts & Anna Garrett at Watts Gallery - Artists' Village

As artists in residence at The Watts Gallery, Charlie and Anna will immerse themselves in the rich history of Limnerslease and the surrounding area. In particular, their research will focus on connections between three highly successful creative women from the 19th century: Mary Watts, Helen Allingham and Gertrude Jekyll.

Coinciding with our Helen Allingham exhibition (21 November 2017 - 18 February 2018), the artists provide a contemporary approach to working with the landscape and the use of watercolours, combined with a range of other mediums including drawing, prints, video and sound work.

The residency is also inspired by the diaries of Mary Watts and her dedication to building the Artists' Village in Compton, along with her own artistic endeavours and work with the local community. As contemporaries, Mary, Helen and Gertrude were all involved in the Arts & Crafts movement. Mary and Gertrude also had roles in the National Union of Women's suffrage. Through the residency Charlie and Anna will explore ideas closely associated with these artists: nature, the woodland and plants, femininity, feminism and collaboration.
