HMP Feltham

I didn't choose to come to the Art classes, I have surprised myself with how much I have engaged and enjoyed the course. I'm not usually a man who joins in group activities, but it has been good to talk and draw.

Watts Gallery Trust has been facilitating workshops at HMP YOI Feltham since 2013. The Novus Education Team at HMP YOI Feltham B is a prison for male young offenders aged between 18 and 21.

This year, Watts Gallery Trust's Art for All Community Learning Programme supported 18 participants from HMP YOI Feltham to achieve a Trinity College London Arts Award.

This year's highlights:

  • Designing sketchbook covers for the Limner Collection, inspired by patterns found across Watts Gallery – Artists' Village.
  • Achieving Bronze Arts Awards, awarded by Trinity College London, who offer learning and qualifications to support individual creative development in any setting.
  • Koestler Awards - an annual arts award offering cash prizes, written feedback, certificates, mentoring, publication, exhibition and sale opportunities to people in the criminal justice system. Around 3,500 people enter each year.

  • I played around with the lines and patterns from photos from Mary Watts Chapel. Having the opportunity to try screen-printing has felt liberating. I feel like I've had a bit of freedom.

Art has offered me a chance to express myself, I'm bursting to go! Art has been really calming, I feel better as a result.

I've learnt lots of techniques. Nothing has been too challenging. I'm really pleased with my achievements. Arts good for you in prison.

This year 24 residents from HMP YOI Feltham have taken part in the Watts Gallery Trust Art for All workshops. The young men always look forward to Ruth and her team of amazing Artists from Watts Gallery visiting us at Feltham YOI, and this year was no different. They deliver a wide variety of projects too many different ability learners making it inclusive for all.

Art is not on our curriculum full time, so the young men, really look forward to the sessions put on by the Artists. It gives them an opportunity to take part in the popular practical sessions, being able to express, explore and engage in education through art, whilst gaining an accreditation, the opportunity to enter the Koestler Art Competition and have their art displayed. The young adults always enjoy meeting the visitors coming to work with them and really appreciate the time and effort made to support them. The positive feedback and high number of attendances to the session shows how much these sessions are appreciated and enjoyed.
