Compton Pottery Coloured Ware
Wednesday 24 April - Wednesday 24 July
This display has been curated by independent researcher Hilary Calvert to celebrate the release of Mary Seton Watts and The Compton Pottery. Co-authored with Louise Boreham, this publication presents the first comprehensive study of the Compton Pottery.
Hilary Calvert's interest in the Potters' Arts Guild began with a chance visit to Watts Gallery in 1988. A meeting with the then Curator, Richard Jefferies, gave her the opportunity to view a selection of Compton pottery. This encounter inspired Hilary to embark on an extensive research project and to build her own collection of the pottery, some of which features within this display.
In addition to terracotta garden ware, small decorative pieces were made throughout the life of the pottery at Compton. Featuring a diverse range of objects, from the early designs of the Potters' Arts Guild to the post-war creations of Compton Potteries Ltd., this display explores the historical and stylistic development of Compton Pottery coloured ware.
