Curator Picture Talks - Thetis

Free with admission

This ten minute talk will give you an insight into this full-length mythological female nude in a seaside setting produced by Watts from 1867 - 1869. As his model, 'long Mary' posed for Watts, he produced an elongated representation of Thetis; a sea nymph, or more commonly know as the Goddess of Water. This beautiful representation of Thetis, a Nereid in Classical myths, represents a traditional human figure, however elongating this figure by painting on a narrow canvas in line with aesthetic importance produced through the Aesthetic Movement.
