Patrons Private Tour
Monday March 4th | 11am
Join a private tour of grand 15th century West Horsley Place, West Horsley, Surrey. Formerly the home of Mary Duchess of Roxburghe and bequeathed to former University Challenge presenter Bamber Gascoigne, this extraordinary house is the location for many of the interior settings in ITV's current adaptation of Thackeray's novel 'Vanity Fair'.
A cross-section of various architectural and decorative styles, its Tudor origins include a great Stone Hall which once hosted Henry VIII to a 35-course feast (including stewed sparrow and heron). The king beheaded him three years later.
Rarely open to the public, this tour will be a special opportunity to see this atmospheric house while it undergoes extensive renovations by the Mary Roxburghe Trust. (Comfortable shoes are recommended.)
Its formal gardens and ancient orchard now lead into the new home of Grange Park Opera's extraordinary Theatre in the Woods. The UK's first new opera house in the 21st century, it has now hosted two summer seasons of opera, to critical acclaim. Our visit will include a special tour of the interior of its five-tiered auditorium, modelled on the horseshoe shape of Milan's iconic La Scala, with a personal account of how this amazing building was erected in such a short timescale in 2017.
Early booking is advised as numbers are strictly limited.
