The English cottage had been an icon of English national identity for well over a century before Helen Allingham's cottage scenery paintings won such popularity. Professor Andrews, editor of The Dickensian and Victorian expert, will give a fully illustrated lecture tracing the evolution of the English cottage's cultural significance from the late eighteenth century through to the late-Victorian work of Allingham.
