The Majesty of Rome in the 19th century
16 - 20 November
Deadline for bookings: 3 April 2018

In 1844, after almost a year in Italy, G F Watts went to Rome with his friend Lord Holland. Together they visited key architectural sights. However, what they were most excited about was the Sistine Chapel and its 'matchless' ceiling. On this very special tour of Rome - in the company of noted historian Anthony Majanlahti - guests will enjoy a privileged private tour of the city, culminating in a private view of the Sistine Chapel.

Accommodation is the 4-star Hotel dei Mellini, an independent hotel close to the banks of the River Tiber in a quiet area, only a 10 to 15-minute walk from the historic centre of Rome.

Private visits will include Palazzo Colonna, one of Rome's greatest palaces still in private hands, which boasts a wide variety of Old Masters such as Raphael and Tintoretto, important furniture and sculpture. This was also where they filmed the denouement of the iconic film Roman Holiday.

Other visits include small studio museums such as Museo Pietro Canonica and the National Gallery of Modern Art, as well as Renaissance palaces, including Villa Farnesina which hosts Raphael's early frescoes and Baroque Palaces. On the final night, there will be a special, private evening visit to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel.

Price (including British Airways Economy flights from Heathrow): £2,275 pp (single supplement £235). Price without flights: £2,075. This includes all entry fees to visits on the itinerary and city transport by private coach. Two 3-course dinners and two 2-course lunches are also included, as well as all tips and taxes.

This tour is open to our Patrons and Friends. To book or for further enquiries, please contact Johanna Gaudot on 0207 449 9707 or Johanna@arttoursltd.com.

Please note: Rome is a city where reasonable mobility is essential. Several visits have to be done on foot because coaches cannot navigate the city centre and a number of walks will be included.
