About Masterclass: portrait sculpture

Saturday 24, 31 January and 7 February 2026

10am - 4pm

Three-day intensive course

Join sculptor Jethro Crabb for an in-depth three-day masterclass in portrait sculpture. Working from a live model, you will learn how to take accurate measurements, construct a portrait in clay, and develop a strong understanding of anatomy, observation, facial structure, character, and likeness.

Through a balance of demonstration and hands-on practice, participants will explore key sculpting techniques including modelling, measurement, and working with clay to create realistic and expressive forms.

Course structure:

Day 1: Record and take measurements using callipers, and begin blocking out the head in clay.

Day 2: Build the structure of the head using measurements and close observation, with a focus on understanding the anatomy of the skull.

Day 3: Refine facial features and likeness, creating convincingly realistic forms in clay, and explore surface finishing techniques.

Outcome:

By the end of the course, you will have a completed portrait in wet clay. This can be left at the Gallery or taken away for a small additional fee to cover the armature. Please note that the clay piece will remain unfired; participants wishing to make their work permanent through firing or casting can seek guidance from Jethro, though these processes are not included in the course.
