A blue robed abstract figure painted in oil

George Frederic Watts, Sower of the Systems, 1902, oil on canvas

Watts Gallery Trust

The Sower of the Systems takes inspiration from the Sistine Chapel ceiling, advances in astronomy, and the Bible to reimagine the creator in this striking and truly original painting.

George painted it when he was 85. He found inspiration for the picture in astrophotography, the photography of objects in space. Advances in this technology gave people in the 19th century new views of the solar system. In The Sower of the Systems Watts imagines the creator’s movement through space and time. The creator has turned away from us, busy with galaxy formation. His robes swirl in the universe whilst stars and galaxies blaze.
