Chalk sketch of a nude female figure
George Frederic Watts, Long Mary, date unknown, chalk

Like many Victorian artists Watts often made drawings of the nude human figure. This drawing uses blocks of black and white chalk to represent the areas of light and shade on the model’s body.

This drawing may depict his favourite model Mary Bartley, known as ‘Long Mary,’ who was a housemaid at Little Holland House. Mary posed for Watts for several years, and he used those drawings for the rest of his life as material for his paintings.
