From the diary of Mary Watts

Wednesday, April 20, 1887

Constantinople My dear one not well, the cold here affects him. I found Pride & Prejudice & began to read it to him. No novelist delights him more. It is so finished & so complete, so without effort, just the right words used with reticence & such graphic power.

Thursday, November 23, 1893

Signor downstairs, grieved at the loss of his dear red muslin in the drawing room & I am filled with compunction! It was faded, & had a tawdry unsolid look to me. Its crooked stripes & all were dear to Signor! He is pleased otherwise with the colour in the hall & dining room, & we feel we have made a good step towards finishing the little house. The billiard room begun now.

I read Miss Austen to him in the niche, always a help to recovery.
