Join our resident Watts Potter Bahareh Khomeiry on Friday for a creative and inspiring hands-on pottery session, exploring a variety of exciting techniques and skills. In one session, make your own ceramic piece to be fired ready to use or display in your home. Each theme runs for two weeks, but each session is standalone, so book for just one or as many as you wish and dive into the technique of the week!
Stencil and Pottery
9 and 16 JanDiscover the joy of pattern and colour through stencilling with clay. In this session, you’ll create your own hand-built platter using the slab technique, then decorate it using a range of beautiful stencils — from bold geometric patterns to delicate natural forms. Guided by our resident potter, you’ll learn how to layer colourful slips to bring depth, texture, and personality to your design.
Origami with Clay
23 and 30 JanExplore the art of folding and form through clay! In this creative session, we’ll experiment with origami-inspired techniques—bending, folding, and shaping slabs to create dynamic and sculptural ceramic forms. A range of templates will be provided to choose from. Great for all levels.
Nature Plates
6 and 13 FebImmerse yourself in the beauty of nature through clay! In this hands-on session, we’ll explore the art of imprinting plants and leaves onto clay slabs, capturing their delicate textures and organic patterns. Using formers, we’ll shape the slabs into unique plates—each one a reflection of the natural world. Please bring your favourite picked flowers, leaves, or other natural textures you'd like to imprint.
Cappuccino Mug and Saucer
20 and 27 FebCreate your own handmade mug and saucer — perfect for enjoying your favourite cosy drink. In this session, you’ll learn how to shape and build your set using the slab technique, adding your own personal touches to make it truly unique. Whether you love elegant simplicity or playful textures, this project is a wonderful way to explore functional pottery and design something you’ll love to use every day.
Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, these sessions are a great opportunity to experiment, create, and refine your skills in a welcoming and sociable studio setting.
Please note that firing can take up to four weeks; the team will contact you when your work is ready for collection.
Unfortunately, we’ve run into some problems with our kiln and it is out of action.
We are exploring alternative options for firing works and will do our best to minimise delays. We really appreciate your patience and understanding while we work out the best course of action. We apologise for any inconvenience.
With a background in architecture, Bahareh Khomeiry’s journey in ceramics began out of fascination with the rich history of traditional tile-making in her home country, Iran. Her curiosity about how these tiles were made led her to pursue another BA in Ceramics, and since 2017, she has been a dedicated potter and tile artist.
Now based in the UK, Bahareh furthered her artistic ceramics practice by completing an MA in Ceramics at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA). Her work blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary techniques, offering a diverse approach to creating ceramics.
Bahareh explores the act of constructing and assembling elements, seeking balance in the process. Inspired by the way Persian domes are built—layer by layer, with each brick playing a vital role—she applies this method to ceramics. By combining hand-building and throwing techniques, she creates forms that are both structured and fluid.
Her recent series, Hair as Freedom: Cut Plaits, is a tribute to the "Women, Life, Freedom" movement that emerged in Iran in 2022. Witnessing the courage of Iranian women who removed their headscarves and cut their hair (plaits) in defiance of oppression deeply impacted her. This series captures their journey, from entrapment to liberation, and ultimately to unity. Cut Plaits represents these brave women fighting for their rights.
I really value being able to take part in these workshops at Watts. I love making in 3D and although very familiar with clay it isn't something I can do at home. I will continue to come to workshops and having mentioned it to others will be bringing interested friends. - Workshop attendee
