G F Watts, Violet Lindsay, 1879, oil on canvas

Watts Gallery Trust

George Frederic Watts painted the famous artist and socialite, Violet Lindsay, on several occasions. Violet was a supporter of theatre and the arts, and was an original member of an artistic and social group called 'The Souls'. This portrait was widely exhibited during George’s lifetime, both in Britain, Europe and the United States. The painting was described as 'a superb jewel', with 'a richness without parallel'. It made a significant impact on European art in the 1890s.
