We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Assistant Curator, Exhibitions to support the delivery of our forthcoming major exhibition.

About the role

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled Assistant Curator, Exhibitions to support the delivery of our forthcoming major exhibition. This exhibition will explore the fascinating lives and legacy of seven extraordinary sisters, illuminating their roles as artists, muses, salonnières, and cultural intermediaries during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Their remarkable influence will be brought to life through a compelling selection of paintings, photographs, and archival materials.

Main duties

Exhibition Planning & Delivery

  • Support the development and delivery of the temporary exhibition.
  • Assist with exhibition design using SketchUp and/or other relevant visualisation tools.
  • Assist in the coordination of the production of exhibition interpretation including wall text, labels, and the publication.
  • Liaise with lenders, and institutions as required.

Registrar & Logistics

  • Support the registrar functions of the department, including processing loan agreements, Government Indemnity Scheme application, and commercial insurance documentation.
  • Organise and oversee transport and transit logistics for incoming and outgoing loans, working closely with approved art handlers and transport agents.

Research & Interpretation

  • Conduct scholarly research to support exhibition concepts and object interpretation.
  • Contribute to writing exhibition texts, digital content, and interpretive materials for diverse audiences.
  • Assist in generating academic and creative content that connects with Watts Gallery’s mission and audiences, including Smartify content.
  • Attend offsite research trips with Exhibitions Curator.

Installation & Practical Support

  • Support installation of the exhibition, including assisting with layout, mount making, and object handling under supervision.
  • Work collaboratively with technicians, designers, freelance contractors, and couriers.

Teamwork & Administration

  • Provide administrative support to the Exhibitions Curator as required.
  • Maintain good working relationships with colleagues across departments including Engagement, Marketing and Press, Visitor Services, Trading, and Development.

Person specifications

Essential

  • A degree in art history, museum studies, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience in an exhibitions or curatorial department, ideally within a gallery or museum setting.
  • Knowledge and experience of registrar processes, including loan administration and transport coordination.
  • Proficiency with SketchUp or similar 3D design software.
  • Experience of Government Indemnity Scheme applications for insurance purposes.
  • Strong research and writing skills with the ability to communicate ideas clearly and accessibly.
  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Practical understanding of object handling and exhibition installation.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with nineteenth-century British art.
  • An interest in nineteenth-century women’s history.
  • Experience working with collections databases (e.g. Axiell, EMu, TMS).
  • Knowledge of museum best practice and relevant standards (e.g. Spectrum, Government Indemnity Scheme).
  • Interest in historic environments and working in a rural setting.
